I have this situation happen to me quite often. I find it helps when I ask the user to please explain how to reproduce the issue to me like I'm 5 years old. Unfortunately, some people feel their intelligence is insulted if you explain "obvious" things (e.g. "of course I knew that!"), so I wonder if that makes some people hesitant to go into details.
I'd rather people treat me as a 5-year old when they report issues :)

You can use the menu "Edit this page" on the left to help me fix anything on pretty much any of my web pages: https://yihui.name/en/2013/06/fix-typo-in-documentation/

I am very sorry that users like me make your work very cumbersome. Your article motivated me to reflect on the problems you mentioned in your post from my (the user) point of view. It is a somewhat philosophical/theoretical treatise of the problem written in clumsy English. https://notes.peter-baumgartner.net/2017/10/17/what-is-obvious-and-for-whom/ But maybe the article "What is obvious and for whom?" is of interest for you.
That is a very thoughtful blog post. I learned a lot from it. Thanks for sharing!
