So I agree with almost all the points. There should be a new mold with respect to conferences, especially where the groups are digital and tech savvy. Society for Neuroscience 2012 had an app that had cool features. Also one thing of note: they made it clear what their #hashtag was so people weren't going around #ENAR2013 #ENAR13 #ENAR this year (Karl and a few others of us used #ENAR2013).

The two-sided badge is one of the best comments I have heard about easy fixes.

Here are some of the things that I would note:

  1. I've been to some more restrictive conferences that were on campuses. I had to literally just Google Where things near me to find places as the surrounding areas are sometimes residential homes.

  2. I don't know (and you've noted) whether the money before registration will ever fly. Also you have to not allow people to get any perks of registration before paying.

  3. LOVE the free beer idea/mixer - drawing a crowd shouldn't be a problem.

  4. As @kristin_linn noted, other conferences (#AAAS) have had twitter mixer parties that allow people to meet you in real life (what a thought). I think this would be great for young statisticians/researchers who follow people to meet them.

  5. Not just seating areas to chat, but places that actually have "desk space" since all of us are going to be on a computer at some point (especially after a great talk showing slides).

Hopefully we can see some new things come of this from those who are organizing conferences (and those who I talked to at ENAR about organizing one soon).

Oh yeah, desk space. I desperately need that. With power sockets.

I wrote my name on the back of my name badge, to make it double-sided. I don't remember who taught me that technique.

When I saw your handwriting, I was thinking that perhaps that was the badge you brought to all conferences.
