Oh... It's really a shame that I don't know the "Behind the tan door: getting ahead in academia" video myself...

Yihui, I think you did well in the measure theory course. Your homework was always neatly written. Your question of "Have you ever seen a set which is not measurable in mathematical statistics" is definitely a legitimate question.  And yes you are right, we almost never touch a non-measurable set in practice.

But I think it is more for the completeness of mathematical system. That's how science goes, it's part of the system and it may not be useful up to our current knowledge, but you never know what's gonna happen in the future. It is like people 300 years ago don't know the broad use of number theory in computer science today. Or maybe some aliens invade earth and see if we can make a non-measurable set or not, and we will face the destiny of being eliminated if we don't, :-).

Haha, I love and buy your aliens invasion theory. I do not mean to challenge the mathematical system, and I agree completeness is important. My concern is more about what the next generation of students should learn as the disciplines branch off so quickly, and perhaps the emphasis for all students should vary a little bit.

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate it.
