Dear Yihui,
I like this change! But I do not which file I am supposed to modify? Is it the beamer.cls? Sorry for the simple question, 😳 and thanks for sharing the info!
laia
The file 'beamerthemeBoadilla.sty' which is usually under the directory '/texmf/tex/latex/beamer/themes/theme/'

I too also use Boadilla often because of its simplicity. I wonder if the modification you presented can be implemented using some code in the LaTeX file's preamble? That way the file can be self-contained when sending it to others or used on other computers.
I totally agree the approach in this post is awkward. It was done when I was still a beginner on LaTeX, and I don't know how to put such a beast in the preamble. Anyway, I have almost abandoned beamer, because I'm so tired of its style at academic conferences...

What did you replace Beamer with then?
Well, I do not have the nerve to answer this question -- I begin to use FoilTeX, which is just like plain A4 paper, no colors, no fancy bullets/buttons, ... to show nothing but what I'm going to talk about.
