Putting into PreTeXt

I read on your website that you prefer to be contacted this way - I hope that this is okay therefore, even if not necessarily a public question, I can appreciate that your impressive collection of work certainly keeps you busy!

I'm a data scientist at IDEMS International, where part of my work focuses on developing open educational resources and data science tools. I wanted to get in touch regarding your books:

  • bookdown: Authoring Books and Technical Documents with R Markdown
  • R Markdown: The Definitive Guide
  • R Markdown Cookbook

I thought it might be useful to share a broader project I am currently working on. We are developing a shared ecosystem for open statistics and data science textbooks, with the aim of making them easier to reproduce, adapt, and maintain over time. The idea is to make it easier to recontextualise material across different settings while retaining the same underlying pedagogical structure -- for example by adapting examples, applications, or teaching contexts, or language.

What we hope to build is a system that makes it easier for lecturers, authors, and others (including ourselves) to create and maintain such variants while still preserving attribution and strong connections to the original work. As part of this project, we currently have a GitHub repository containing more than 30 transformed books, which we are continuing to refine and expand. In that context, I have also converted your books on bookdown and R Markdown into a PreTeXt-based format here:

https://pretextbooks.github.io/rmarkdown-book/meta-front.html

Before taking things further, I wanted to share this work with you directly and hear your thoughts on the project and the direction we are taking. I would very much welcome any feedback you might have, and I would of course be happy to make adjustments to better align with your intentions for your books.

Many thanks as well for making your book openly available.
